I am careful about who I let work on me. When you train as much as I do, the person on the other end of the recovery matters as much as the training itself, and I would rather drive a bit further for someone I trust than settle for whoever is nearest. For me that person is David Lucas, who runs a sports massage practice out of Stratton Audley. He is also a friend, so take the warmth as read, but I would not put my name to a recommendation I did not mean. Here is what he offers and why I rate him.
For context: I have been seeing David for ten years, ninety minutes every other week. He works hands-on, reaches for a K-Laser on the stubborn spots, and uses the Tend, a focal vibration device I now keep at home between sessions. He trains hard himself, marathons and triathlons, so he treats a worked body from the inside, not from a textbook.

The man first
David is the kind of practitioner who actually listens before he lays a hand on you. He asks what you have been training, where it is grumbling, what you are working towards, and then the session is built around that rather than a one-size-fits-all routine. He knows his anatomy properly and he explains what he is finding as he goes, so you leave understanding your own body a little better, not just feeling looser. That combination, real skill and the patience to teach you something, is rarer than it should be.
Sports massage
The core of what he does, and the reason I first went. His sports massage is proper hands-on work, not a spa rub. He finds the tight spots you had learned to live with, works the whole chain rather than just the sore bit, and pitches the pressure to do real work without tipping into pointless pain. I use him for the fortnightly maintenance I have written about elsewhere, and he is a big part of why that habit actually holds. Whether you are carrying a specific niggle or just keeping on top of the training load, this is the foundation everything else builds on.
K-Laser therapy
Where his setup goes beyond the usual is the kit, starting with the K-Laser. Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to encourage tissue repair and settle inflammation in a targeted spot, a stubborn tendon or joint that massage alone is not reaching. It is a genuinely useful extra tool for a specific problem area, and having it in the same room as the massage table means he can combine hands-on work with targeted treatment in a single visit rather than sending you somewhere else. If you have a nagging spot that will not clear, this is the thing I would point you to.

The cold plunge
There is a cold tub on site, and if you have read anything else on this blog you will know how I feel about cold water. David is the one who got me into ice baths three years ago, so this part is personal. Being able to finish a session with a proper cold plunge is a real advantage. Cold water immersion is one of the better-evidenced recovery tools going for easing soreness and lifting your mood and alertness, and having it available right there, done properly rather than in a wheelie bin in your garden, makes it easy to actually use. Pair it with the massage and you are stacking two recovery methods that genuinely earn their place.

The infrared sauna
At the other end of the temperature dial, David has an infrared sauna. Where a traditional sauna heats the air around you, infrared warms the body more directly at a lower ambient temperature, which a lot of people find more comfortable to sit in for longer. Heat exposure has its own recovery and relaxation case, and having sauna and cold plunge under one roof means you can do the heat-and-cold contrast that so many people chase, without cobbling it together yourself. That “forged by fire, cooled by ice” duality is more or less the whole idea of this blog, and David has both halves in one place.

Why I rate him
What sets the practice apart is not any single service, it is the combination. Skilled, attentive sports massage as the backbone, plus K-Laser for the stubborn spots, plus cold and heat for the recovery side, all in one visit with someone who knows what he is doing and takes the time to do it right. You are not bouncing between a masseur, a physio and a spa. It is one person, one place, one joined-up approach to keeping you moving.

If you are anywhere near Stratton Audley and you train, or you just want to look after a body that is getting worked hard by life, David Lucas is worth the trip. That is not me doing a mate a favour. It is where I actually go.
